Iran arrests 26 drug smugglers, seizes narcotics

Iranian police detained 26 bandits during a clash with drug smugglers and confiscated over 5 metric tons of narcotics, the state television reported on Wednesday. The seizure took place in the Sistan and Baluchistan province, about 1,500 kilometers (940 miles) southeast of the capital, Tehran, the report said. The area, close to the borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been the scene of frequent clashes between police and drug smugglers. The TV report said that drugs such as opium, hashish and heroin were among the seized narcotics.
