Iran denies US claims it is arming Taliban rebels

Iran on Thursday dismissed claims by the United States that its government was arming Taliban rebels in Afghanistan, the official IRNA news agency reported. US government officials have said they have proof that weapons from Iran were reaching the Taliban, with one diplomat going as far as to say the government in Teheran was directly supplying the weapons. "Such claims are baseless and lack logical evidence," IRNA quoted Mehdi Safari, Iran's deputy foreign minister for Asia, as saying. Safari said the accusations were aimed at diverting public attention from the failures of the US and Britain to provide security in Afghanistan.
