Commander of Iran's ground forces Brig.-Gen. Ahmad Reza Pourdastan on Tuesday equated military action against his country with suicide, according to the Fars News Agency.
"Today no enemy has the requirements and the desire to carry out a military attack against the powerful Iran," Pourdastan said, "and military aggression against Iran is highly unlikely and even impossible and is synonymous with the suicide of the aggressor."RELATED:Iran: US fomenting Mideast unrest to save IsraelAhmadinejad: The US is pleased with Mideast unrestAhmadinejad: Mideast upheaval will spread to West
Pourdastan was speaking at a meeting of foreign military attaches in the Iranian capital.
Pourdastan explained that Iran's current military power was superior to any other time period in the country's history.
He emphasized the "defensive nature" of his country's armed forces and weapon programs, explaining that they simply serve the stability and security of the region and Iran's national interests.
Last week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the world would see a new Middle East without the United States and Israel. He made the remark in a speech to thousands of people in the southeastern city of Zahedan, Iranian Press TV reported.
“A new Middle East will emerge without the presence of the United States and the Zionist regime [Israel], and their allies in the near future,” Ahmadinejad said.
He accused the US and Israel of plotting to “spark an Iranian-Arabian Shia-Sunni conflict.”
Ahmadinejad denounced “US imperialism” in the region, saying, “Regional governments and nations should remain vigilant to overcome US plots, and to not play in the US court.”
Israel was nearing its end, he said, and added, “Regional nations have awakened, but the global arrogance intends to sow discord among countries in the region.”
The Iranian people and regional nations are unhappy with the existence of the Zionist regime [Israel], and are against it. They will continue their fight until the defeat of the US and Zionist regime in the region,” Ahmadinejad said.
