The death of a Palestinian woman from east Jerusalem who was killed near the city's checkpoint in the northern Shuafat neighborhood on Tuesday night is being investigated by the Israel Police's Jerusalem District and the Justice Ministry’s Police Investigation Department (PID), the two agencies announced on Wednesday.

She arrived at the checkpoint in serious condition with deep wounds, and her death was later pronounced by emergency medical personnel. An investigation was then opened.

East Jerusalem residents say that she was shot by Border Police officers who were operating in the area, while she was in her home. Border Police said it was looking into whether its operations and her death are connected.

MDA said she was injured in a violent incident

Several Palestinians users on Twitter/X posted late Tuesday night of a raid in Shuafat, claiming that the victim was 66-year-old Zahia al-Obeidei. Emergency medical teams from Magen David Adom said the woman was injured in an incident of violence, and when she arrived at the checkpoint, they proclaimed her death. Paramedics added that she was unconscious when they arrived at the scene.

Police later said that an overnight operation in the Shuafat refugee camp turned violent, that stones and rocks were thrown at the security personnel. One man was hit in the head and evacuated to hospital.

As a result, police added, the operators opened fire, after sensing a threat.
