A new youth leadership program honoring Israeli hero Yossi Tahar z”l, a fallen Shin Bet and Shayetet 13 soldier, was launched Sunday in the Druze town of Majdal Shams. Tahar died on October 7 in a heroic battle near the Israeli-Syrian border, saving civilians and leading his unit under fire.

The initiative, organized by the Shomer Hachadash movement, brings together 25 students from grades 10–12 for weekly educational sessions focused on local heroes, connections to Israel and the Golan, and the roots of their communities. The program aims to cultivate young leadership grounded in heritage.

It is managed in collaboration with Munir Madi, head of the Kerem-El Leadership Training Association; Husam Kabishi, mayor of Julis; and Dolan Abu Salah, mayor of Majdal Shams. Participants will not only engage in weekly activities but also take part in nationwide programs including workshops, trips, agricultural projects, national missions, and shared Shabbat experiences with peers from across Israeli society.

Leadership of the program is overseen by retired Captain Alon Kipnis, a Shayetet 13 officer and close friend of Yossi Tahar z”l. “This program is an opportunity for young people to connect with their roots while developing leadership skills inspired by Yossi’s courage and commitment,” said a Shomer Hachadash spokesperson.
