Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion's car was attacked by haredi (ultra-Orthodox) stone-throwers at Avinoam Yellin Street in the capital city, Israel Police said Monday.

No injuries were reported, although the vehicle's windshield was damaged.

At the time, the mayor was visiting the Mea She'arim neighborhood.

Police have begun searching for the suspect.

This is not the first incident of this nature to occur recently. Tensions with the haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community have been escalating due to controversy over the haredi draft law.

Over 10,000 ultra-Orthodox men gathered outside of the Israeli consulate in New York City on October 19, 2025, to protest the draft of haredi Israelis.

Haredi protesters attacked MK Yoav Ben-Tzur (Shas)

Earlier this month, Haredi protesters attacked MK Yoav Ben-Tzur (Shas) in Jerusalem following Shas's agreement to advance the proposed draft law.

Protesters shattered Ben-Tzur's car window and reportedly physically harmed him. Trash bags were also thrown at Ben-Tzur's car, according to Israel Police.

Israel Police intervened and assisted in getting Ben-Tzur to safety.

A 14-year-old resident of Jerusalem was arrested a week after the attack.

The ‘Million Man March’

In October, mass organized protests against the haredi draft law. Hundreds of thousands of haredim (ultra-Orthodox) took to the streets to protest in Jerusalem.

The demonstration dubbed the ‘Million Man March’, led to transportation disruptions throughout Jerusalem and surrounding areas, with thousands of officers deployed throughout the city.

This month, Israel's High Court of Justice ruled the state must act as quickly as possible to formulate an effective enforcement policy toward draft-evaders from the ultra-Orthodox (haredi) community,

The court issued an absolute order requiring the state to act diligently and swiftly to initiate real criminal proceedings against haredi draft-evaders.
