Eighth grader who committed suicide, Maya Elmo, laid to rest
The 13-year-old took her life after missing the school bus for a class trip.

Friends and family attended the burial on Wednesday of Maya Elmo, a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide in her home in Kfar Saba the previous day.While the full circumstances remain unclear, an initial police investigation showed Elmo had arrived at school in the morning with her father only to find that she had missed the bus for her eighth grade class trip. A devastated Elmo and father returned home where she went into her room and killed herself.Friends and family were at a loss to explain the reason for her suicide, describing her as having been a happy girl with a big smile.However Channel 2 reported on Wednesday that it had obtained a text message Elmo had sent to a few of her friends a month ago, suggesting she had some difficulties.“There is nobody who will protect me and talk to me,” Elmo had written.“In the last few days I feel like air, as if I am nothing,” the message went on. “That I am forcing you to talk to me. You made me feel like I am just an atom or a germ.You never really involved me in anything.”“You didn’t think of me as a person but rather just as a clown that makes you laugh and I noticed that there is no such thing as friends,” she said. “Nobody really likes each other.The second you leave they talk about you, about your clothes, your appearance, you character and, enough, if you are not really friends with one another then at least don’t talk behind your backs.”Initially it was reported that Elmo may have committed suicide because her family was unable to afford to pay for the class trip. The Education Ministry denied this saying she had paid the fee well ahead of time.The Ministry issued a statement expressing their condolences over Elmo’s death and ordering an examination of what happened.“The Education Ministry expresses deep sorrow over the death of eighth-grade pupil from Kfar Saba and offers its condolences to the bereaved family,” the statement read.“At the same time, director- general of the Education Minister Michal Cohen instructed the director of the central district to establish a committee to examine the circumstances of the death of the student.Cohen also instructed district professionals to provide whatever support the family needed.
