Nitzat Haduvdevan has decided to remove plastic bags from its health food stores. The bags’ environmental damage begins with their production and, unfortunately, doesn’t end with their disposal after use.
The decomposition rate of plastic bags is extremely slow. Burying them causes irreversible damage to ground water and the soil, and leads to the emission of gases and toxic substances that harm the environment.
Instead, the stores will use sturdy paper bags in two sizes: 28 cm. x 29cm. and 32 cm. x 26cm. The cost of each paper bag will be about 10 agorot.
Nitzat Haduvdevan is the largest chain of organic and health foods in Israel, with 45 branches.
A survey the chain conducted showed that it used three million plastic bags in 2018, which in the next few weeks will be replaced by a similar number of paper bags.
Israel’s Bag Law has reduced the country’s use of plastic bags by retail chains some 50% (about 7,000 tons of plastic a year). However, Nitzat Haduvdevan is not considered a large retail chain and is therefore not included under the law. Nonetheless, the company said that as part of commitment to protect the environment, it is encouraging ecological consumption and a change of perception and behavior among consumers.
