The battle in Rafah, which also resulted in the deaths of two other Givati Brigade soldiers -- IDF Major Benaya Sarel and Sergeant Lial Gidoni--has become known as Black Friday. Dozens of Palestinians were killed in what has become one of the most debated incidents in the war, due to the IDF's controversial use of the so-called Hannibal Protocol to try to thwart the capture of Lt. Goldin.
In the now-public recordings, an exchange between Givati Brigade Commander Col. Ofer Winter, Givati Operations Commander Major Nadav Danino and other soldiers can be heard as events unfold, including the order to use the "Hannibal procedure".
The Hannibal Protocol supposedly allows commanders to take aggressive action, including endangering the life of a captured soldier, to foil the capture.
