The appointment of Kulanu MK Dr. Yifat Shasha Biton as Construction and Housing Minister was approved by the Knesset plenum on Wednesday.
"I am well aware of the importance of the position and will do my best to fulfill it in the best possible way," said Shasha Biton after the swearing-in ceremony. "I am grateful to Finance Minister [Moshe] Kahlon for the trust he has given me all along."
Shasha Biton, 45, was born in Kiryat Shmona, has a doctor of education from Haifa University, and is a mother of three. She previously served as deputy mayor of Kiryat Shmona, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kiryat Shmona Economic Corporation, the Kiryat Shmona Community Center and the Tel Hai Academic College.
She has introduced laws aimed at increasing the protection of the personal safety of infants and toddlers while serving as the chairwoman of the Committee on Children Rights.
"Fifty years ago, the idea that a finance minister from Givat Olga would appoint a housing minister from Kiryat Shmona would be considered a sign of the apocalypse," Kahlon said after the ceremony. "Today, this is reality."
Shasha Biton will serve until the establishment of the next government after the elections on April 9.
