Shas and Degel join Lion’s coalition in J’lem

Haredi parties Shas and Degel Hatorah have joined new Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion's municipal coalition giving him a working majority of 16 out of the 31 seats on the municipal council. Rumors circulated throughout Tuesday that Hitorerut, led by Lion's defeated rival for the mayor-ship Ofer Berkovitch, was close to finalizing an agreement with the new mayor, but the two haredi parties crossed the line first. Degel with six seats and Shas with five, join Bayit Yehudi and the United with Aryeh King party with two seats each Likud with one, in Lion's municipal coalition. Both Degel and Shas strongly backed Lion in the mayoral race, with their voters coming out in large numbers to vote for him in both the first and second rounds of the election. Shas received two deputy mayor-ships, along with the Finance, Municipal Tax, and Haredi Education portfolios, among others. Degel was also given two deputy mayor-ships, along with the critical Planning and Construction portfolio, as well as the equally important Public Buildings portfolio. “This is an exciting moment, I am certain that we will work together with all the parties and together unite the residents of Jerusalem and work for the sake of Jerusalem,” said Lion following the signing of the agreement.
