The Israel Under-19 National Team wrapped up a historic run at the FIBA U19 World Cup with a 79-68 win over host nation Switzerland on Sunday, clinching seventh place in what was the team’s first-ever appearance in the tournament.
Sharon Avrahami’s squad came into the classification games following a tough 79-55 loss to Slovenia in the quarterfinals, a result that ended their hopes of competing for a medal. Despite the setback, the blue-and-white regrouped and focused on finishing the tournament on a high note – and did exactly that.
Israel controlling the game from opening tip, never trailing against Swiss
In Sunday’s finale, Israel controlled the game from the opening tip, never trailing against the Swiss. After building a 17-point lead in the second quarter, Israel withstood several comeback attempts by the hosts to seal a satisfying end to a memorable week.
Oren Sahar once again led the team with 21 points, while Rani Belaga flirted with a triple-double, posting 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists.
In the earlier quarterfinal defeat to Slovenia, Israel started strong following a Round of 16 win over Cameroon but couldn’t maintain the momentum.
Chairman of the Israel Basketball Association, Amos Frishman, praised the team and the significance of its run:
“The Israel Under-19 National Team thrilled an entire country with its journey at the World Championship. I’m proud of how the team played, especially after their preparation was interrupted by Operation ‘Am Kalavi’ and with the difficulties in sending the team abroad. Once again, we saw proof that there is a bright future for Israeli basketball.”
