A man was killed Sunday morning after he ran a red light at a railroad-crossing near Kfar Menahem and was hit by a train.
The victim, Menuhah resident Nati Ezra, 45, was later pulled from his car hundreds of meters down the rails, where it was dragged by the train. No passengers on the train were injured in the collision.
Police and transportation authorities have opened an investigation into the incident.
The deadly accident brought rail traffic between Tel Aviv and Beersheba to a standstill for hours, with severe gridlock reported at major transportation terminals in both cities.
Sunday morning is typically the busiest of the week at major bus and train stations, as soldiers make their way to back to bases after the weekend.
