2 dead, 13 hurt in string of weekend car crashes

Two people were killed and 13 were injured in several road accidents that occurred throughout the country over the weekend. A 60-year-old woman was killed on Saturday during a multi-car collision near Rehovot. Seven others were people were wounded in the accident. One of the wounded was listed in moderate condition, while the others suffered only minor injuries. At the Ilah Junction, on the old road between Haifa and Tel Aviv, a driver was instantly killed after he attempted to pass a commercial vehicle and crashed into an oncoming car overnight Friday. An initial investigation into the incident found that Moayad Abu Rokun, a northern resident aged 68, had moved into the oncoming lane in order to overtake a car. The driver of the car he crashed into was seriously injured and immediately evacuated to Rambam Hospital in Haifa for treatment. In another accident, two motorcyclists collided into a parked car, leaving one seriously injured and the other in moderate condition in Haifa. One motorcyclist, aged 25, suffered from head injures and the other, aged 19, suffered chest injuries. Both persons were evacuated to Rambam Hospital. In a third accident, also in Haifa, a drunk driver crashed into a Magen David Adom ambulance on its way back from evacuating other road accident victims. Soon after the crash, the driver exited his vehicle and began to attack the MDA team. The driver was arrested by Haifa police. Finally, a Tel Aviv driver was moderately injured after he crashed into a pole. Police were investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
