A car thief was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday morning by a village security guard in Ben Nun, near Latrun. The incident began when the village's security guard received a report of a car break-in. The guard quickly spotted a car containing a group of thieves towing the stolen car behind them. The guard signaled to the thieves to pull over, but they began driving aggressively in a bid to escape the village. After driving down a dead end, the thieves exited the vehicle and ran towards the guard who was pursuing them on foot. Feeling threatened, the guard opened fire, striking and killing one man. Magen David Adom paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man while evacuating him to Assaf Harofeh Hospital, where doctors pronounced his death. The remaining thieves fled the scene. Police have launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects, and set up road blocks in the hours after the incident. The security guard was interrogated at a Ramle police station, but was then transferred to the Police Investigations Division, since the guard is also a Border Police volunteer. The PID will seek to ascertain whether the guard's use of his firearm was proper.
