Commanders reportedly beat subordinates in the IDF

Serious violence was reported on Monday in a company within the Givati brigade in which commanders would allegedly physically abuse soldiers under their command as a means of corporal punishment. Israel Radio reported that the commanders would kick their subordinates and even beat them with sticks. The soldiers were warned not to report the practice. Officers from a different Givati battalion noticed the violence and reported it to the company commanders. Only then were the abusive soldiers punished. One sergeant was sentenced to three weeks in military prison, a squad commander and another soldier were removed from their posts, and the company commander was issued a disciplinary warning. The IDF condemned any such acts of violence and said it acts to uproot them. The military added that the isolated incidents reported were known and were dealt with. In the cases in which the commanders were involved in violence, they were relieved of their duties.
