Dane gets 33 months for Hizbullah connections

Iyad al-Ashwah, 38, , who is also a Danish citizen and was accused of spying for Hizbullah was sentenced by an Israeli court on Tuesday, after a plea-bargain, to 33 months in prison. He was convicted for having contact with Hizbullah and intending to give them information. Al-Ashwah, a Palestinian refugee of Lebanese descent, was caught by the Shin Bet a year ago. Under the plea-bargain the original charges against him were changed from spying and aiding an enemy during wartime to contact with an enemy. The state agreed to change the charges because no ideological connection was made between al-Ashwah and Hizbullah and because he never committed the acts he planned to.
