DM's advisor on settlements resigns

The Defense Minister's advisor for settlements, Ron Shechner, resigned Wednesday morning after three years in the position. "Because of the destruction and the eviction in northern Samaria," Shechner said, "I felt that I could not be part of destruction instead of construction," Army Radio reported. Recently, Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz had requested that Shechner be removed from his position following the publication of the Sasson Report, which connected Shechner to the establishment of illegal outposts in Judea and Samaria. Shechner said in response to Mazuz's recommendation that Mazuz's response had actually renewed his ambition to remain within the Defense Ministry, and that his departure from the position was wholly unrelated to Mazuz's recommendation. The "Peace Now" movement responded that they are satisfied with Shechner's resignation after Shechner was so prominently featured in the Sasson Report as an official who was directly responsible for violations of the law.
