The Education Ministry was considering delaying the opening of the 2006-2007 school year for two weeks following a request by local council leaders from the North.
The leaders also asked for a special vacation period between the Yom Kippur and Sukkot holidays to allow students a staged beginning of the school year.
According to Army Radio, if the request for the delay was approved, the school year would begin late throughout the country.
