Eitam wants Likud, National Union merger

National Union MK Effi Eitam met a group of Likud central committee members close to party chairman Binyamin Netanyahu at Tel Aviv's Carlton Hotel on Thursday and asked for their help in his effort to bring about a merger between the two parties. Eitam met recently with Netanyahu and failed to convince him to support the move at this stage. Netanyahu wants Eitam to join the Likud without his party, because his addition would give the Likud a former general but such a merger would could harm the Likud's efforts to attract former Kadima voters. The Likud secretariat met on Thursday night and decided to welcome former Kadima members back into the party but not forgive them for the harm they caused the Likud by defecting to Kadima.
