Ex-MI head under investigation for allegedly leaking informant's name

Maj.-Gen. Eli Zeira, former head of Military Intelligence, is under investigation for allegedly leaking the identity of a key Egyptian informant. News of the investigation was revealed on Thursday following a petition by Haaretz to the Petah Tikvah Magistrates Court that had imposed a gag order on the probe. Zeira served as head of MI during the Yom Kippur War and is being investigated for allegedly providing journalists with the name of the Egyptian official who tried to warn Israel ahead of the 1973 war. The Egyptian, Ashraf Marwan, died last year after he fell from his London apartment. Marwan was a high-ranking official in Egypt at the time and was the son-in-law of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser.
