Former Hamas spokesman says Israel has to make the first step

Ghazi Hamad, a former Hamas government spokesman, said Wednesday that he expects Israel to take the first step towards attaining a cease fire with Hamas.
"It is impossible to demand of the Palestinians - who sustain blows on a daily basis - to make the first step," Hamad told Israel Radio, adding that Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh was pursuing a simultaneous and bilateral quiet in both Gaza and the West Bank.
"Quiet is in the interest of both sides, and if the IDF commits to ceasing all attacks on the Palestinians in Gaza, Hamas will also agree to [stop attacks]," he said.
Hamad also commented on the matter of Gilad Schalit, calling it a "separate issue, mainly because no one can promise a de-escalation if he is released."
