Settler leaders' last-moment proposal for a compromise to prevent the evacuation of the settlement of Amona was rejected early Wednesday morning.
The heads of the Yesha Council had petitioned Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz to let them disassemble the nine houses and take them to Ofra. After consultation with Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra and Shin Bet heads, the request was rejected on the grounds that the relocation could take up to nine months, and that there was no legal possibility of building a new neighborhood in Ofra.
The heads of Yesha had argued that the relocation of the houses would only last for two weeks, but Olmert rejected their claims.
