A day after a haredi man in his twenties was moderately injured near the Carta parking lot, police were deployed in the area on Saturday ahead of what has become a weekly confrontation over Shabbat observance in the capital.
Police said the haredi demonstrator threw himself under the wheels of an idling car and was moderately injured Friday night after attending prayers held near the parking lot opposite the Old City's Jaffa Gate, to protest against its operation on Shabbat.
Jerusalem police spokesman Shmulik Ben-Ruby said it was not clear whether the driver knew the man had crawled underneath his car when it was stopped at a traffic light.
After light turned green, the protester was dragged several dozen yards beneath the car before the vehicle stopped, Ben-Ruby said.
The driver fled the scene and police set up roadblocks to try to apprehend him, he said.
Last week, hundreds of haredim threw rocks and chanted slogans in Saturday evening demonstrations against the operation of the parking lot.
Six people were arrested as protesters clashed with police at both the Carta parking lot and on Rehov Bar-Ilan in the Mea She'arim neighborhood last Saturday, where protesters had congregated with the intent of marching to the lot.
Police prevented many of the protesters from moving forward, yet others slipped past and made their way toward the parking lot, where they attempted to block traffic.
Officers arrived at the parking lot as well, where the arrests were made, while protesters back in Mea She'arim continued to throw rocks and other debris at police and passing vehicles, lightly injuring one passerby. By 9 p.m., police said the demonstrations had concluded and order had been restored.
