A husband stabbed his wife and then stabbed himself in front of six of their seven children, following a quarrel between the two, on Friday. The husband and wife from the town of Or Yehuda, died at Tel Hashomer Hospital in Tel Aviv Friday night after succumbing to the stab wounds they sustained earlier in the day. Police sources added that no reports of domestic violence were received in the past. However, some neighbors claimed that the couple, which arrived in Israel four years ago from Ethiopia, would sometimes fight and screaming could be heard from their apartment. Welfare workers said that the Beja family was quiet. They added that Ethiopian families do not like police involvement and tend to not report family violence. Adv. Mithag Dassam, head of the Beka Foundation, which helps new immigrants from Ethiopia, says "the mayor of Or Yehuda is giving the sense that Ethiopian immigrants are not welcome in his city. Ethiopians feel discriminated against, and that is in addition to all the other problems that they deal with day-to-day." The children, aged between two and 16, were transferred to the care of social welfare authorities.
