Kalandiya checkpoint to be Israel-only crossing

The Kalandiya checkpoint just north of Jerusalem will starting Tuesday serve solely as crossing into Israel, a military source said Monday. The crossing, which had previously served Palestinians traveling through the West Bank as well as those crossing between the Palestinian Authority and Israel, will now only be open to Palestinians with entry permits to Israel or those carrying Israeli identity cards. The changes at the site, which will go in effect by Tuesday, were made after bypass roads were constructed in the area for Palestinians traveling through the West Bank, the military source said. Tens of thousands of Palestinians use the heavily-guarded crossing to enter Jerusalem on a daily basis.
