The Knesset Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs Committee on Wednesday decided not to vote on a proposal to approve financial aid for Holocaust survivors because it would cost the state 100 million shekels a year.
The committee's chairman, Michael Nudelman, said he had to discuss the issue with the Finance Ministry.
According to the proposal, drafted by MK Collette Avital (Labor) and supported by MKs Zvi Hendel (NU-NRP) and Shelly Yachimovich (Labor), the survivors would be given aid unless they were already getting funds from National Insurance.
Hendel called the committee's decision "shameful."
"Only after the last Holocaust survivor has died will the Treasury approve laws in their favor," Israel Radio quoted Hendel as saying.
