Labor officials reached a second compromise behind the scenes at the Labor central committee meeting on Thursday night and decided to end the party's membership drive on January 30. Agriculture minister Shalom Simhon had wanted to end the drive on Thursday. MKs Ami Ayalon and Ophir Paz-Pines wanted to end the drive on January 1 and Labor Secretary-General Eitan Cabel on March 13. The party reached a compromise that the drive would be held at the end of January. Earlier, Cabel had said that the membership drive was necessary to fund the election with membership fees. "Democracy costs money," said Cabel.
