Two people were killed and at least 12 were lightly injured in a fire that erupted in a southern Tel Aviv apartment building overnight Wednesday. The fatalities were a man and woman in their thirties. Magen David Adom pronounced them dead in their first-floor apartment. Most residents of the building, located on the corner of Wolfson and Herzl streets, were apparently foreign workers. Of the injured, three were evacuated to hospital and six were treated by MDA teams at the scene. Five of the injured were policemen who were working to rescue people from the building. It was not yet clear was caused the fire, but Channel 10 reported that the blaze apparently broke out due to a short circuit. Police launched an investigation into the incident.
