Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann and Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz on Tuesday urged the High Court of Justice to reject the petition by the Movement for Quality Government against the pardoning of former MK Naomi Blumenthal.
Blumenthal, who was convicted of obstruction of justice and bribery, avoided a jail sentence after President Shimon Peres reduced her eight-month prison sentence to six months of community service plus a 12-month suspended sentence.
Mazuz and Friedmann said in while the severity of Blumenthal's crimes and the moral turpitude had still stood, the reduced punishment was an act of kindness due to her hard personal circumstances which arose after Blumenthal's appeal was rejected. Blumenthal was a widow and her health had deteriorated, read Mazuz and Friedmann's appeal, adding that she had expressed remorse and apologized for her actions.
Mazuz and Friedmann also cited flaws in the MOQ's petition, saying that it had not gone through the required procedures.
