Party leader Haim Oron rejects Likud MKs' assertion that US president is "meddling" in Israeli politics.

After MKs and ministers from the coalition accused the US administration of inappropriate "meddling" in Israeli politics, Meretz leader Haim Oron told The Jerusalem Post Wednesday that he believed the stance taken by US President Barack Obama on West Bank settlements was "correct."
"Obama understands Israel's true interests," Oron said. "His opinions are good for the Israel I see as a Zionist Jew."
When Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu came back from his meeting with Obama three weeks ago, Oron "found that I agreed with Obama more than with Netanyahu.
"The Israeli Right always thought that whoever disagreed with them was an enemy and it's not right," he said.
On Rahm Emmanuel, Obama's White House chief of staff, Oron said "I am happy for everyone who, no matter where he is, expresses opinions like ours."
Reacting to allegations that his party was responsible for sending people to the US to coach Obama on "how to handle Netanyahu," Oron said "Tell the Right that Meretz set its views even when there were right-wing extremists in the White House," alluding to Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush.
