German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Israel Saturday as part of a three-day Mideast tour. On Sunday, she is to meet separately with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Earlier in her trip, she met with Jordan's King Abdullah at the Red Sea resort of Aqaba.
In her meeting with Abbas, Merkel is expected to demand that the new Palestinian unity government, a coalition of Hamas and Abbas's Fatah movement, will meet the international community's conditions for acceptance, including explicit recognition of Israel and renunciation of violence.
