MK Rabbi Avraham Ravitz (UTJ) passes away, aged 75

MK Rabbi Avraham Ravitz (United Torah Judaism) passed away overnight Sunday, succumbing to a heart disease. Ravitz had been hospitalized at Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital since the beginning of the month after suffering a heart attack at his house and losing consciousness. Ravitz, 75, had served in the Knesset for 21 years, representing UTJ and Degel Hatorah. During that time, he held a number of positions, among them deputy housing minister, deputy education minister, deputy welfare minister and chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee. In November 2008, Ravitz announced that he would not be running in the next Knesset elections and would be retiring from politics.
