MK Ruhama Avraham criticized the handling of the conversion process in Israel and claimed that it creates difficulties for would-be converts. Speaking at the Knesset plenum, the MK stated that over 300,000 non-Jewish immigrants currently live in Israel, and every year, 3000 children who are not recognized as Jewish, are added to that figure.
An inter-ministerial commission proposed to establish a Governmental Conversion Authority. A Rabbinical Judges (dayanim team headed by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar would be responsible for solving halachic difficulties that stand in the way of those wishing to convert.
