The Dan bus cooperative, which carries passengers around the Tel Aviv metropolitan region, is switching from paper to plastic. Starting on Monday, February 1, it will no longer accept paper Hofshi-Hodshi monthly passes. People who want a monthly pass will have to get a Rav-Kav card, a “smart” plastic card on which people can load money to pay for their public transportation. Dan also said it would carry on accepting paper “cartissiya” punchcards indefinitely, but will not sell them after March 3. The new plastic card went on sale in November and is available at various issuing points throughout the region. Dan is offering discounts for people who get personal cards. These carry the card-owner’s photo and are insured, so that in case of loss or theft, the passenger’s credit is passed on to a new card. The company also offers anonymous passes, but these are sold without the special discount and insurance. All other discounts, such as for students and senior citizens, remain in effect.
