Olmert, Livni, sign agreement with students

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Education Minister Yuli Tamir signed an agreement on the future of higher education with student representatives Itay Shonshine and Itay Barda. On May 22, after a 37-day-long strike, the administration of the National Union of Israeli Students accepted the compromise agreement, which was brought forth by the government in order to bring an end to the students' strike. The compromise freezes tuition for the upcoming 5768 academic year at the current level of some NIS 8,600. It promises that the current semester will not be cancelled and the students will not be penalized despite the fact that they have missed more than a third of the semester.
