Palestinians stab haredi youth in J'lem

Haredim riot in response, attacking e. Jerusalem Arab drivers, police.

A 14-year-old yeshiva student making his way to the reputed east Jerusalem grave site of a Jewish high priest was stabbed in the back and neck and moderately wounded by two Arab assailants Friday evening, in the third such attack in the city in the last several months, police and rescue officials said. Yishai Nachman, was walking alone on a path near the grave of Shimon Hatzadik (Simon the Righteous) in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah at about 5 p.m. Friday when he was attacked by two Arabs who stabbed him at least six times before fleeing. The victim was rushed to Hadassah-University Hospital at Ein Kerem, where he was reported to be in stable condition, with six stab wounds in the back. Nachman, a Jerusalem resident, is expected to make a full recovery. A police manhunt was under way for the suspected Arab attackers. The attack occurred just after the start of Shabbat as dusk was falling, enabling the assailants to flee under cover of darkness. The area in question, which lies on the winding east Jerusalem road to Mount Scopus, is surrounded by Arab neighborhoods but is also home to a small group of Jews who study at a restored synagogue at the site. Later in the evening, haredi teens hurled stones at three Arab vehicles traveling on a central Jerusalem thoroughfare, lightly injuring two motorists, police said. The two who were injured by shards of broken glass in the stoning on Rehov Bar-Ilan were evacuated to Hadassah-University Hospital at Mount Scopus. Police forces which arrested a Jewish suspect were assaulted by dozens with tear gas, enabling the suspect to flee, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said. Earlier this month, a 28-year-old Jewish woman was stabbed in the face and lightly wounded by a teenage Palestinian attacker in a central Jerusalem park. In August, a 21-year-old British yeshiva student, Shmuel Mett, was stabbed to death by a knife-wielding Palestinian man in the Old City of Jerusalem. A classmate was seriously wounded in that night-time attack.
