President Shimon Peres met on Thursday with a special envoy of Chinese President Hu Jintao and told him that if Syria was really interested in peace with Israel, it would agree to direct negotiations, beginning with an official meeting of Syrian President Bashar Assad with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Peres also extended an official invitation to Jintao to visit Israel on its 60th year of independence, Israel Radio reported.
