Psychiatrists ask for more time to decide if alleged daughter-killer is insane

Psychiatrists at the Lev Hasharon Psychiatric Hospital in Pardessia have asked police to give them more time to determine whether Assaf Goldring, the man who confessed to choking his three-year-old daughter to death 10 days ago, is insane. The request was sent to Goldring's lawyer, Gad Zilbershlag, and to detectives from the Central Police District's Central Unit, who are leading the investigation, shortly before a remand hearing was held for Goldring at the Ramle Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Goldring's custody was extended by a further eight days. During his stay at the hospital, Goldring made a "suicide-by-cop" attempt, attacking a police officer who was guarding him in the hope that the officer would open fire and kill him, it emerged during the hearing. Relatives of the murdered girl, Noa, accuse Goldring of putting on a show and attempting to act insane to escape life in prison. They believe Goldring carried out a cold-blooded, premeditated murder. Police are continuing to interrogate Goldring during his stay at the hospital. Ch.-Supt. Micha Levine, who heads the homicide department of the Central District's Central Unit, told The Jerusalem Post a day after the murder, "It's not clear [whether Goldring is sane]. I will never fully understand this. No motive will give anyone the right to take a life."
