Rabbi Yitzhak Kadouri suffered a significant worsening of his health Tuesday, causing doctors to fear for his life.
Speaking to Army Radio, Aryeh Deri, formerly of the Shas party, said that during the early afternoon hours doctors discovered a fungus in his body, and that his condition reached "a real critical stage."
Deri added that the medication for the fungus would only take effect in the late afternoon hours, such that the preceding hours were crucial.
The Kabbalistic sage was taken to Jerusalem's Bikur Holim hospital last Monday in unstable and critical condition.
Reputed to be 106 years old, the rabbi was admitted to the hospital with a severe case of pneumonia.
His doctors attached him to a respirator and induced a coma with anesthesia. He is being treated in the internal medicine department's intensive care unit by Dr. Yosef Kleinman, who is also Kadouri's personal physician and head of the department.
