Shin Bet: Schalit kidnapper arrested

A Gazan who participated in the cross-border raid near Kerem Shalom last June during which Cpl. Gilad Schalit was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists, has been arrested, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced on Friday. The Shin Bet said Muhammad Zufi, 30, was apprehended in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, on June 9 by soldiers from the Givati Brigade's Zabar Battalion, along with additional terrorist suspects.

He also revealed his involvement in a 2002 attack on the IDF's "Africa" outpost near the southern Gaza Strip border fence during which four members of the IDF's Beduin Desert Patrol Battalion were killed: company commander Maj. Ashraf Hoiash Mazarid, 28, from Beit Zarzir, Sgt.-Maj. Ibrahim Hamadieh, 23, from Rehaniyah, St.- Sgt. Mofeid Sawayed, 25, from Abu Sna'an, and Sgt.-Maj. Eli Abu Ghanem, 25, from Haifa. The Shin Bet said that Zufi, a member of the Palestinian Popular Resistance Committees, was most recently involved in Kassam rocket attacks on Israeli towns in the western Negev. Clashes between the IDF and Palestinians continued throughout the West Bank on Friday. On Friday evening, Palestinians opened fire at IDF soldiers at outposts near Nablus and Jenin. None of the soldiers was hurt and no damage was caused in either incident. Also on Friday, troops operating in the southern Gaza Strip shot and wounded two armed Palestinians. In Judea, soldiers manning a checkpoint near the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron arrested a Palestinian who was carrying a 15-cm.-long knife. The man was transferred to the Shin Bet for interrogation.
