Soldier lightly wounded at checkpoint

Witness: "I heard the noise, and I saw the soldier grab his arm."

An IDF soldier was lightly wounded by gunfire at the Kalandia checkpoint near Jerusalem. He was shot in the arm, but nobody saw the shooter. He apparently had been standing at a distance from the scene. The wounded man was one of the soldiers who monitor the cars passing through the checkpoint, and was therefore not inside of one of the reinforced positions.

A Palestinian witness waiting in a car to cross the checkpoint told The Jerusalem Post on the scene: "I heard the noise, and I saw the soldier grab his arm, and blood was dripping down it." Medics first treated him at the scene, and then evacuated him to a nearby IDF base. From there, he was taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, other soldiers ran to the checkpoint with their guns poised, and took up positions behind the checkpoint's barrier. The IDF called more forces to the scene to search for the perpetrator An armored vehicle raced up to the checkpoint and about 15 soldiers jumped out of the vehicle and began running; they were called back moments later. Traffic leading to the checkpoint was halted in both directions, as the IDF blocked the roads. A soldier at the roadblock told the Post that no one could drive on the roads, saying it needed to be "clear for the evacuation of the wounded soldier."
