A 25-year-old man suspected of raping a young religious woman with whom he was living was released on bail Monday by a Jerusalem court after promising to marry her, police said.
The suspected boyfriend-turned-rapist, Tomer Gueta, met the 28-year-old woman several years ago and moved into her Jerusalem apartment a couple of weeks ago.
Last week, the young woman lodged a complaint with police that she had been raped by her boyfriend, who then fled from their apartment, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.
As police searched for him, the alleged rapist called his girlfriend and pressured her to cancel her complaint, even allegedly promising via a rabbi that he would marry her if she agreed not to testify against him in court, the police said.
Police arrested Gueta on Sunday.
It later emerged that the two had indeed drawn up a marriage agreement with the help of a rabbi. The suspect was placed under house arrest Monday by Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.
