Tel Aviv court releases suspects in honor killing to house arrest

Two brothers suspected of perpetrating an "honor killing" on their sister in March 2006, were released to house arrest by a Tel Aviv District Court on Tuesday after the judge determined that their prolonged detention was illegal. The presiding judge in the case, Judge Gilad Nevei Tal, ordered the release of Salaam Abu Ganaam and Mahmoud Abu Ganaam following a decision by the Supreme Court at the beginning of May which determined that the law does not permit suspects to be detained for longer than 9 months. Both brothers have had their detention extended seven times. The brothers have been awaiting trial for the murder of their sister, whom they admitted to killing - with the help of two other brothers - in order to save the family honor.
