Vandals desecrate Jerusalem war memorial

Vandals have desecrated a monument honoring the memory of 270 fallen soldiers from Jerusalem's Gonenim neighborhood, community workers discovered Tuesday. The black marble inscribed with the soldiers' names had been covered with posters, slogans criticizing the Supreme Court, graffiti, psalms, and swastikas. Gonenim community authority director Avi Nuriel immediately reported the vandalism to local police, calling the deed "horrifying." Nuriel said that this was one of the saddest days of his life. "When [it] happens on Tisha Be'av, of all days, a day on which we're meant to think about baseless hatred, our [sense of] offense is even worse," he said.
