From Mao to Now

Israel Museum charts China's post-Tiananmen reemergence Even though Mao Tse-Tung has been dead for three decades, the Chinese art world is still digging itself out of the rubble of the Cultural Revolution that he launched in 1966 and that lasted for 10 years, during which Western culture was suppressed and centuries-old Chinese traditions felt the lash of state control. Fortunately, this excavation work has brought to the fore a slew of contemporary Chinese artists who are keen to explore the wide world with an abandon and candor unthinkable not long ago. The results of this heady spirit of creativity can be seen in the exhibition "Made in China" at the Israel Museum Jerusalem (until 3 January 2008).
