Klezmer artist German Goldenshteyn dies at age 71

Clarinetist German Goldenshteyn, a native of Eastern Europe who was considered a leader in the klezmer revival in America, has died of a heart attack, said his friend and colleague, Michael Alpert. Goldenshteyn died on June 10 at age 71. He was born in a shtetl called Otaci, then in Romania, now in Moldova. A resident of New York City's Brooklyn borough, he moved to the United States only 12 years ago, bringing along handwritten notebooks filled with nearly 1,000 klezmer tunes he transcribed over decades, many of them until now undocumented.
