Santa Cruz Jews slam honor of Palestinian rep

Jewish leaders in Santa Cruz, California, called on the mayor of the city on Thursday to apologize for granting the symbolic key to the city to a Palestinian representative who made derisory comments about Israel at conference in city at the beginning of month. Asif Safiyeh said that "in terrorism terms Hizbullah is an amateur compared to Israel." The mayor said that the key was given in recognition of Safiyeh's work towards peace in the Middle East and he would have given it to an Israeli representative if he had come to the city. Rav Litvak of the city's Bet El synagogue said that a man who had expressed his view in such a way was not fit for the honor granted to him by the mayor.
