This Pessah, it is hoped there will be few children around the world who, like the fourth son, don't know how to ask, as 20,000 children's Haggadot are being distributed for free throughout the Diaspora in 15 languages, in time for the Seder.
The Department for Religious Affairs and the Diaspora, a division of the World Zionist Organization, first produced the more accessible Haggada in 2006, in an effort to help Jewish children connect with the Pessah Seder. Only 5,000 books were made at the time - in English, Spanish and French - but due to overwhelming demand, thousands more have been added each year. This year, for the first time, the Haggadot have been translated into Italian, Hungarian and Turkish.
The children's Haggada, which is distributed through synagogues and Jewish community centers around the world, consists of about 10 passages from the traditional Haggada and is supplemented by illustrations and activities to encourage children to participate at the Seder table.
Rabbi Yechiel Wasserman, who heads the WZO department and created the initiative, said, "We received a great reaction to the Haggada and plan to expand the project so every child in every country can read the Haggada. It will take time, but we're in full swing. Issuing the Haggada is another method to strengthen the Jewish identity of the Diaspora."
This year, the Haggada project cost WZO $40,000 to produce and is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Swedish, Russian, Croatian, Danish, Czech, Portuguese, Finnish, Italian, Hungarian and Turkish.
