2. LEAVE IT TO LEV
Amir Lev is one of the most unusual singer-songwriters in Israel. His trademark is his deep voice, often compared to that of Leonard Cohen. Lev is also known for his extraordinary guitar playing. Over the years, he has worked with some of the biggest names in Israel, including Shlomo Artzi, Berry Sakharof and Evyatar Banai. Lev performs his past and present hits at Tel Aviv’s Cafe Bialik.

3. ‘RAIN’ COMES TO TEL AVIV
The Alias dance company of Switzerland will perform the thought-provoking and emotive Sideways Rain show at the Suzanne Dellal Center as the opener of the center’s Culturescapes program. Culturescapes is a Basel-based dance event that takes place in a different country every year. Sideways Rain, which is performed by 15 dancers, was choreographed by Guilherme Botelho and is based on the theme of directionless movement and a sense of lack of control over one’s fate.

4. SAINTS COME MARCHING IN
Celebrating 25 years of diplomatic and cultural relations between Spain and Israel, the Israel Museum presents a special work on loan from the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid – El Greco’s St. John the Evangelist (1597- 1604). The style of the painting is in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation’s ideal of presenting the saints as real-life men and women and recalls the Apostolados, a pictorial ensemble of 13 canvases that El Greco created for the Toledo Cathedral in the early 17th century.

TOURS
5. FOOTSTEPS OF FORGIVENESS
The City of David hosts a special experience leading up to the Days of Awe. In a two-hour night tour with a tour guide and accompanying musicians, the public will have a chance to get acquainted with the figures that lived in this historic area. After the tour, one may walk up to the Western Wall and pray Slihot after midnight. Tours will be held every 20 minutes with a maximum of 35 participants in each group. NIS 55/60.

6. JAFFA AT NIGHT
Every Saturday night throughout October, the public is invited to take a guided tour through stone-paved alleyways of ancient Jaffa, from Napoleon’s era to modern times, past the Greek Monastery and overlooking Jaffa port.

7. LOCAL MOVES
The Project, the ongoing dance collaboration between the Israeli Opera and the Suzanne Dellal Dance Center, offers two new premieres. They are Double/Single by renowned choreographer William Forsythe and an as-yet-untitled work by 28-year-old Israeli choreographer Idan Sharabi. The Project, begun two years ago, sponsors 13 dancers chosen from among 260 applicants.

8. A FAITHFULL RETURN
Quirky British singing legend Marianne Faithfull is returning to Israel for a show at the Zappa Shuni Amphitheater in Binyamina.
Faithfull has faithfully been coming back to the country, having appeared here a half dozen times in the last two decades.
Her most recent visit was in 2008 as part of the International Women’s Festival in Holon. The 64-year-old singer’s 23rd album, Horses and High Heels, was released this year, featuring guest appearances by Lou Reed and the MC5’s Wayne Kramer.

9. ON THE CATWALK
Avid fashionistas can revel in their field during the Third Holon Fashion Week at the Holon Design Museum.
The conference will look at the importance of the digital world to fashion and fashion as a multi-disciplinary art form, as well as an adjunct to its commercial applications.
Special guests include whiz-kid super-designer Zac Posen (pictured), New York Times fashion writer Stephanie LaCava, architect/designer Ron Arad – the museum is his work – stylist Alexandra McGuinness and actress/model Amber Anderson.

10. ON THE FRINGE
The 32nd Acre Festival of Alternative Israeli Theater, which takes place in and around the Old City of Acre, offers something for everyone. Over the course of four days, the festival will showcase 35 street theater events – nine of them premieres – and a stack of special events, including the return of 2006 Acre festival prize-winning director-puppeteer and storyteller Naomi Yoeli with a highly emotive production called Explosive: War Tourism.
